Orphaned Works Bill

Orphaned Works Bill, please read and watch video

I think we all need to be concerned about this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqBZd0cP5Yc

I actually am well aware of the bill. The whole of my company seems to be blogging about it and trying to raise awareness. After reading the entire document, I'm very concerned. The wording in some key areas seem to be far too vague and leave far too much room for interpretation. It seems as if our rights as artists are in jeopardy. The major problem is a lot of us lack the patience to read such over embellished dribble. One of the most troubling lines has to do with the concept of a "reasonable" search for the author of the work. That is the kind of thing meant to tie up a less wealthy person (the artist) in expensive litigation with a larger more wealthy company. The other insane request is that we all "register" our work to protect it. This makes it impossibly expensive to even show your work publicly without incurring a huge expense. Either that or risk it's theft ad someone else getting rich off of your work. I feel the worst aspect of this bill is it is being misunderstood by the politicians. They are being told this bill is meant to release old stock pictures that no one alive has the right to claim. The sad part is under our current copyright laws, almost all of these works fall under the statute of public domain. The art community in all mediums will suffer a huge blow should this bill come into law.

I urge you all to do some research and find out more for yourself, don't take anyone's word for it. If you feel strongly about this, write to your local politician, there is a lot of money and special interest behind this bill.

My ongoing Quest

In my quest to become a better photographer I've been reading a lot.  Lighting books, Photoshop, and theory. Right now I'm reading Annie Leibovitz book "At Work". It's really quite interesting how she has evolved. I wish I could take 2 days to 2 weeks per portrait.
